ArtPeaceMakers of Wellfleet is pleased to present the all ages Annual WalKing Celebration, commemorating and celebrating the life and mission of Martin Luther King, Jr, on January 15, starting at 11:30. The Celebration will begin with a drum and song circle outside Wellfleet Town Hall at 11:30. At noon, Buddhist teacher James Kershner will lead a silent walking meditation along Main Street. The walk will end at Wellfleet Preservation Hall for a program of film, spoken word, art and music, followed by a potluck in the downstairs hall. Potluck offerings and donations to the Wellfleet Food Pantry can be dropped off at the Hall from 10-noon.
This community event honors Dr. King, shares his legacy with younger generations, and recognizes the continuing struggle for human rights. Affirming Dr. King’s dream of a just and inclusive community, this year in particular we walk in solidarity with immigrant “Dreamers”.
An exhibit of student work curated by ArtPeaceMakers will be at Preservation Hall from January 4-27, and will be hung along the walking route on the 15th. ArtPeaceMakers encourages the creative efforts of local children and teaches active engagement on the themes of peace and justice.
On January 13 at the Wellfleet Public Library from 10am to noon ArtPeaceMakers and the Wellfleet Public Library, and the DACAMorphosis Project, invite children and their parents to make DACAmorphosis butterflies and cocoons and other banners and signs to carry during the WalKing Celebration on the 16th. See www.wellfleetlibrary.org for more information on this and related programs.
